What is a laser vision correction surgery?
In a laser vision correction surgery, also known as refractive surgery, the corneal surface is ablated using advanced laser technology in order to correct its refractive power.
In near-sightedness or far-sightedness, light is either not focused on the retina or it is not focused at all.
Near-sightedness is caused because the distance between the edge of the cornea and the retina (the eye axis) is too long, causing light beams to converge to a point in front of the retina.
Conversely, in far-sightedness, the eye axis is too short, and so light beams converge to a point behind the retina.
In a laser vision correction surgery, the cornea is ablated to reduce its refractive power, in order to make the light beams entering the cornea converge on the retina.
